Polyvinyl alcohol (PVS, the international PVOH, PVA or PVAL) — artificial, water-soluble, thermoplastic polymer. Synthesis of PVS is carried out by reaction alkaline/-кислотного hydrolysis or alcoholysis of complex poly(vinyl ester)s. As the main raw materials for receiving PVS serves polyvinyl acetate (PVA).
Unlike the majority of polymers on the basis of vinyl monomers, PVS it cannot be received directly from the corresponding monomer - the vinyl alcohol (VA). Some reactions from which it would be possible to expect receiving monomeric AF for example accession of water to acetylene, hydrolysis of monochloraethylene, reaktsiyaetilenmonokhlorgidrin with NaOH, lead to formation not of vinyl alcohol, but acetic aldehyde. Acetic aldehyde and AF represent keto-and enol tautomeric forms of the same connection from which the ketoform (acetic aldehyde) is much steadier therefore synthesis of PVS from monomer — is impossible.
